LAUREL in Nanjo: Birria Quesadilla and a Mexican Lunch on Okinawa’s South Coast

When I feel like eating something a little more filling in Okinawa, I do not always choose Okinawa soba or a local set meal.

Some days, I want something warm, crispy, cheesy, and full of flavor.

On one of those days, I went to LAUREL | Tacos & Mexican kitchen in Tsukishiro, Nanjo City.

It is a Mexican café and restaurant in the southern part of Okinawa Main Island, with a relaxed “Mexico × Okinawa” feeling.

Nanjo is one of the areas I personally like in Okinawa.

It has a quieter atmosphere than central Naha, and it is a nice area for a slow drive.
For me, one of my familiar routes is to have lunch around Tsukishiro, then continue through the Nirai Kanai Bridge area toward Chinen.

LAUREL fits beautifully into that kind of day.

Not a rushed lunch.
Not a crowded city stop.
Just a small, satisfying Mexican meal during a southern Okinawa drive.

A Mexican restaurant in Tsukishiro, Nanjo

LAUREL is located in Tsukishiro, Nanjo City.

This area is not in the middle of Naha.
It is not on Kokusai Street.
It is not a place you casually pass by unless you are exploring the south of Okinawa.

And that is part of what makes it nice.

The atmosphere around Tsukishiro feels calmer.
There is a sense of space, light, and quiet movement.

If you are traveling by car and planning to visit southern Okinawa — Nanjo, Chinen, Sefa Utaki, or the area around Nirai Kanai Bridge — LAUREL can be a good lunch stop.

It gives the day a slightly different mood.

Instead of another typical café lunch, you can have tacos, quesadillas, birria, or taco rice in a relaxed Okinawan setting.

Chinen

What I ordered: beef birria quesadilla

On this visit, I ordered what I believe was the beef birria quesadilla.

A toasted tortilla.
Meat and cheese inside.
A red consommé-style dipping sauce on the side.

Just seeing it on the plate, I already knew it would be satisfying.

At first, I wondered if I should use a knife and fork.

But honestly, this is the kind of food that feels better when you hold it in your hands.

The restaurant prepared disposable gloves for eating, and the staff also explained it to me.

That small detail made it easier to enjoy the food without worrying too much.

You pick it up.
You bite into the crisp, grilled tortilla.
Then you dip it lightly into the sauce.

The outside is fragrant and slightly crispy.
The inside has the richness of meat and cheese.
And when the sauce touches it, the flavor becomes deeper and juicier.

It is not just “delicious.”

The way you eat it is part of the experience.

The joy of dipping

One of the best parts of this dish was the dipping.

The red sauce on the side gives the quesadilla another layer of flavor.

You can enjoy the first bite as it is, with the crispy tortilla and melted cheese.
Then you can dip the next bite into the sauce and let it soak in just a little.

The texture changes.
The flavor changes.
The whole dish becomes more fun.

I like food that has this kind of rhythm.

Not just eating quietly from start to finish, but picking it up, dipping it, taking another bite, and enjoying the small changes.

The onions on top added a fresh crunch, and the sauces gave it a nice accent.

The dish was rich, but it did not feel boring.

Every bite had something going on.

Very filling, in a good way

This was a very satisfying lunch.

Actually, it was so filling that I was not very hungry even by dinner time.

So if you order the birria quesadilla, I recommend going with an appetite.

It is not a light snack.
It is a proper meal.

For travelers, this can be useful.

If you are driving around southern Okinawa and want one strong lunch before continuing your route, this kind of meal works well.

It gives you energy.
It feels casual.
And it is different from the usual Okinawa travel food options.

Sometimes during a trip, you want something familiar but still local to the place.

LAUREL has that balance.

Mexican food, but in Nanjo.
Comforting, but a little exciting.
Casual, but memorable.

A nice stop during a southern Okinawa drive

If you are exploring southern Okinawa by car, LAUREL can be a good place to remember.

Nanjo has many quiet, beautiful areas.

You might visit Chinen.
You might drive near Nirai Kanai Bridge.
You might explore the coastline or stop somewhere with a wide ocean view.

On a day like that, lunch does not have to be complicated.

You can stop in Tsukishiro, eat something warm and satisfying, and then continue your drive.

For me, LAUREL feels like the kind of place that fits naturally into a slow Okinawa day.

Not a place you need to rush to.
Not a place that asks too much of you.

Just a relaxed restaurant where you can enjoy Mexican food when your body wants something a little hearty.

When I would recommend LAUREL

I would recommend LAUREL if you are in southern Okinawa and want something different from the usual Okinawan food.

It may be especially good for you if:

You are driving around Nanjo or Chinen.
You want tacos, quesadillas, birria, or taco rice.
You feel like eating something filling.
You want a casual lunch with a relaxed atmosphere.
You want a food stop that feels easy but still memorable.
You are looking for something other than Okinawa soba, café rice, or seafood.

Okinawa has many beautiful local foods.

But travel becomes more enjoyable when you do not feel forced to eat only “typical” dishes.

Some days, Mexican food in Okinawa is exactly right.

Final thoughts

LAUREL in Nanjo is the kind of place I want to remember for a southern Okinawa drive.

It is casual, satisfying, and a little fun.

The beef birria quesadilla was crispy, cheesy, juicy, and very filling.
The dipping sauce made the meal feel more like an experience than just lunch.

I liked that it was easy to eat with my hands.
I liked the relaxed mood.
And I liked that it gave a different flavor to a day in southern Okinawa.

If you are exploring Nanjo and feel like something hearty, LAUREL is a nice option.

A little Mexico.
A little Okinawa.
And a lunch that makes the drive feel more enjoyable.
